Shortly after the American Dietetic Association was founded in 1917, the 1920 Census reported our country's population was 89.7% white, 9.9% black, 0.2% Native American, and 0.2% Asian & Pacific Islander (1). (Not until 1940 was Census data obtained on people of Hispanic origin.) By the time ADA celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2017, it is projected the US population will be 17% Hispanic, 13% African-American, and 5% Asian-American, compared with 2007 figures of 15%, 13%, and 4%, respectively (2).
