To say the past 12 months have passed in the blink of an eye is no exaggeration, but they have been some of the most rewarding months of my life. It has been an honor to meet you, hear your thoughts, and exchange ideas about building the future of our Association. Have you heard the great news? It’s official: At the end of May, the American Dietetic Association will close our 2005-06 fiscal year with more members than we had in 2004-05. Like any nonprofit organization that operates on limited resources, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) is faced daily with the challenges of providing both high-quality services to our members and the most reliable food and nutrition advice to the public. Reading Surgeon General Richard Carmona’s excellent debut column in the September Journal, I felt a familiar sense of pride in you, my fellow ADA members. As he did in his appearance at ADA’s 2003 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo, Dr Carmona noted that we are key to reducing the obesity epidemic in America and helping people take responsibility for their health. It is always gratifying to know that those “at the top” recognize our contributions and our expertise, and acknowledge that we are part of the solution.Hurricane Katrina: ADA Members Come Together—And Stay Together
It has been a month since Hurricane Katrina did its almost incalculable damage to the Gulf Coast and the Florida Panhandle—and to the lives of so many people. Please join me in extending thoughts and prayers to everyone who has been affected, including our more than 2,100 members who live in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. We mourn the lives that were lost while admiring the courage that residents showed in the face of this disaster. Although the storm has passed, most survivors have been evacuated, water is being pumped out, and the cleanup and rebuilding are proceeding, Katrina’s after-effects will be felt for a long time to come.Communicating the Value of “the New ADA”

It is a pleasure and an honor for me to make my Journal debut this month as the 80th President of the American Dietetic Association. My sincere thanks for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help guide our Association for the coming year. A special word of thanks goes to my friend and predecessor, Susan H. Laramee, MS, RD, LDN, FADA. Susan’s commitment to our profession and her dedication to fulfilling ADA’s mission of leading the future of dietetics have truly been inspiring.
