In their generous introduction of me as the Academy's 2014-2015 President in the June 2013 Journal, Ethan A. Bergman, PhD, RDN, CD, FADA, and Margaret Tate, MS, RDN, quoted an expression I am fond of using to illustrate the perils of not adapting to changing circumstances: “Ham, rubber bands, and dinosaurs.” This means: Don't do something just because we've always done it that way (like reflexively cutting off both ends of a ham before cooking—a bygone practice from the days of small ovens); instead, be flexible and stretch ourselves (like a rubber band) to try new and different things, because the alternative is winding up like the dinosaurs (Where are they today?).
