As we approach the end of ADA’s 2004-2005 program year, we have an incredible number of accomplishments to acknowledge and celebrate. Like past years, our accomplishments are the result of partnerships between ADA members and headquarters staff. We know the United States is a cultural melting pot, but did you know how recently many of our national “ingredients” have been added to the mix? More than 33 million people in this country were not born here, according to the Census Bureau—that’s 12% of the population. Of that number, more than half come from Latin America, 25% from Asia, 14% from Europe, and 8% from Africa and other world regions. Americans have rarely if ever been more diverse than we are today. Serving clients from increasingly diverse ethnic and cultural populations continues to change the dietetics profession and the American Dietetic Association (ADA) in terms of the needs of our members and the services we provide.Leadership development: Preparing dietetics professionals for success
This month, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) will hold our second Association-wide Leadership Institute, building upon the remarkable success and value of the first Institute in February 2004. More than 250 current and incoming member leaders from affiliates, dietetic practice groups, the House of Delegates, Association committees, the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education, and the Commission on Dietetic Registration, along with 50 ADA members selected through an application process, will gather in St Petersburg, FL for an intensive program designed to fulfill our commitment to developing leadership skills among our members and help achieve ADA’s mission of leading the profession of dietetics.Spirit of the season: Support ADA’s Foundation and get the job done for all dietetics professionals
As the holiday season approaches, many people’s thoughts naturally turn to giving. In the spirit of the season, and to play a significant role in advancing the dietetics profession and ADA, I hope many of you will consider making a gift to the American Dietetic Association Foundation (ADAF).Let’s all advocate for the dietetics profession
It’s an election year, and I hope many of us will exercise our right to vote this month. After seemingly years of debates, campaigning, conventions, and headlines, our country is not only choosing a president, we will soon have a new Congress and new governors and legislators in many states. When the 109th Congress convenes in January 2005, new bills will be introduced and debated, and some will be passed. Some legislation will deal with nutrition-related issues, the top priorities for the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and all dietetics professionals.Spread the word about ADA: Every member is a spokesperson!
Rarely if ever, in the history of the American Dietetic Association has there been so much public and news media interest in food and nutrition as there is now. From morning talk shows and newspapers to the late night news, Web sites, consumer magazines, and the radio, you’re constantly hearing about new research or the latest diet book.
