In the past year, you have taken your dedication to nutrition and dietetics practice to new levels, including many of you serving on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. I have been so honored to serve alongside you as we address vital issues facing not only the Academy but our entire nation and world.Future Trends and the Pace of Change: Are We Ready?: The COVID-19 pandemic has presented an undeniable case for change. Life, work and organizations will never be “back to normal.” This opens up massive opportunities to raise our awareness of future trends and to elevate our profession, build resilience, increase our influence and visibility, and infuse futuristic competencies into our educational programs and practices.

In November, I discussed how you are your own brand. I encouraged you to act on the power you have to persuade and influence others and the importance of self-promotion and branding. Mentoring takes textbook knowledge to the next level by broadening mentees’ insights, developing important “soft” interpersonal skills, building networks, and practicing career-building leadership behaviors. Every 5 years, the US Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services jointly release the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. They are based on a review of the best and most up-to-date nutrition science, and they represent opportunities for the Academy and our members to bring our unequaled expertise to the development and implementation of the cornerstone of federal food policy in the United States.Self-Promotion, Branding, and Attracting Buyers: I am convinced that you have the power to persuade and influence those who choose your services, how you will provide those services and how much you will be compensated for those services.
