More than a decade ago, as a member of the ADA House of Delegates (HOD), I listened with great interest to a presentation to the HOD by former President (and then ADA Foundation Chair) Polly A. After an evaluation of the use of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), it was reported that just 3% of the public actually followed them. Why so few? In the early 20th century, there were only three recognized professions: medicine, clergy, and the law. Today, dietetics is considered a profession along with engineering, accounting, dentistry, social work, and occupational therapy. Every profession sets a minimum level of education and skill development, demonstrated competency, self-regulation, a code of ethics, and standards for credentialing.
