Build On an Unforgettable Year: Living Our Dream
As the Academy’s 2015-2016 membership year comes to a close, so does my term as the Academy’s President. Thank you for this privilege. It has been an unforgettable year for me and I hope it has been a rewarding, productive year for members. I keep thinking of a phrase we used at the 2015 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE): “I’m living the dream. I hope the Academy helps all of you live your dream as well.” Below are some of the high points, activities, and accomplishments from this year that I have spotlighted in these pages, concluding with a look toward our exciting future.Are You Willing and Available to Be a Preceptor?
At the Opening Session of the Academy’s 2015 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE), I talked about the ongoing challenge of providing supervised practice opportunities for dietetics students. “One of the most pressing issues facing our Academy and our profession is the shortage of internships,” I said. “We need preceptors to work with potential interns. I am committed, as president, to doing all we can to create more internships and encouraging more members to get involved and to serve as preceptors.”Since 1973, Members Make National Nutrition Month a Success
Invest in Yourself—Buy Nutrition. That was the theme of the first National Nutrition Week, held from March 4 to 10, 1973. As recollected in a 2006 Journal article on National Nutrition Month: “From the beginning, National Nutrition Week was enthusiastically embraced by [Academy] members as an opportunity to promote the profession as well as to serve as a vehicle for delivering nutrition education messages to the public.”1Decide the Academy’s Future: Vote
One of the most significant facts about the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is also one of the most frequently overlooked: the Academy is our members. That means members play a part in making the decisions, starting with who will serve as our leaders. Members decide how the Academy will best serve our membership and the public. Questions of strategic direction, policies, fiscal management, professional standards, positions, trends, and member issues—to name just a few—are decided by leaders who were elected by members to their positions.Privilege to Represent Members: Special Olympics

Student members are vital to our professional existence. More than 20,000 student members comprise approximately 27% of the Academy’s total membership. Given their importance to the Academy, we must ask: How important is membership in our Academy to students? What are their most pressing issues and concerns? How does the Academy engage students?In a Serving Profession, Family Makes a Difference
Nutrition and family are more closely linked than ever. Did you know family meals are on the rise? The Academy’s 2010 report “The State of Family Nutrition and Physical Activity: Are We Making Progress?” found nearly three-fourths of families eat at home every day, compared to just over half of families in 2003.1Diversity Strengthens Our Academy and Profession
Part of my vision as president is to broaden the ranks of our membership while maintaining our ethical values, embracing change, and reflecting the communities where we live and practice. I am especially proud to personally represent our continued diversity, as the first African American to serve as the Academy’s president.FNCE: Part of the Plan

Welcome to the second annual Kids Eat Right Month! All during August, the Academy and our Foundation are celebrating the importance of healthy nutrition and active lifestyles for children and families—and focusing the attention of the public and health professionals on the value of registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) in accomplishing this vital mission.
