Vegetarian diets have increased in recent years. Even the more restrictive vegan diet, with its exclusion of meat, fish, dairy, and eggs, is gaining popularity, especially among younger people.1 Although health benefits are recognized, dietary patterns of many vegetarians may not be healthy, because of inadequate intake of energy and certain nutrients or their reduced bioavailability. Vitamin B-12, n-3 fatty acids, protein, and minerals, such as calcium, iron, or zinc, are the most concerning.2-5
