      They arrived in response to a handwritten invitation, a last-minute advertisement in the Department of Dietetics column in the October issue of Modern Hospital magazine, or word of mouth, traveling from 21 US states and Canada—at a time that preceded commercial passenger airline travel—to gather nearly 100-strong in Cleveland, OH, in October 1917.
