A Few Days in Autumn: The Founding of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

They arrived in response to a handwritten invitation, a last-minute advertisement in the Department of Dietetics column in the October issue of Modern Hospital magazine, or word of mouth, traveling from 21 US states and Canada—at a time that preceded commercial passenger airline travel—to gather nearly 100-strong in Cleveland, OH, in October 1917. ^,  The group included hospital dietitians; college instructors; cafeteria and school foodservice directors; students; and representatives of the Young Women’s Christian Association, the American Red Cross, and social service agencies —a “breakdown [that] was indicative of the varied areas of interest among dietitians.”
