Applying a Nutrient-Rich Foods Index Algorithm to Address Nutrient Content of Food Bank Food

Published:January 14, 2015DOI:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jand.2014.11.009
The measurement of household food security, important for identifying trends over time, paints an incomplete picture of food availability within a home. Food security, that is, the access by all members at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life, includes, at a minimum, the ready availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods and the assured ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways.

Conversely, food insecurity, affecting 14.5% of US households, is the lack of access to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members.

Food insecurity is composed of two categories: 1) those with low food security who decrease the quantity and variety of foods served at certain times of the month, and 2) those with very low food security who report periodically skipping meals (going hungry) because of the inability to purchase food.

Although a food-secure household, by definition, should not require access to donated food, economic status is a key determinant of food need.
