THE 1990S REPRESENTED A period at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly
the American Dietetic Association) where big changes were happening behind the scenes.
The Academy, along with many other health professional associations, was redefining
its status quo in favor of seeking out novel ways to address the changes and challenges
that were upon it. The myriad successes seen today at the Academy—including gains
in Medicare coverage for medical nutrition therapy, the invitation to members to serve
on the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee for the 1995 US Dietary Guidelines; the
national presence of the Academy at the New York Stock Exchange, the US Olympics,
and the launch of the US Department of Agriculture's MiPlato (the Spanish version
of MyPlate) with First Lady Michelle Obama; and the all-time membership high of 72,000—were
all rooted in the volunteer efforts put forth in the 1990s.
